Causes of Chemical Pregnancy

The ultimate goal of most pregnant mothers, especially those who have been trying to conceive is to keep their baby to maturity. This is however never guaranteed as anything can happen to the pregnancy that can result into miscarriages. Chemical pregnancy is one that prematurely ends so early, especially within the first three months. Most mothers-to-be only realize that they have lost it, or even they were pregnant in the first place late and there is nothing anyone can do, some don’t ever know. There are however few things that can be done to lower the risks.

Chemical pregnancy

It is determined through the testing of the urine and blood for the Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin which is a hormone produced by the placenta. The hormone is meant to sustain the pregnancy and when its production drops in early weeks of the pregnancy, it may result into a miscarriage. Doctors conducting the USG can spot neither the embryo nor the gestational sac. In some cases, the fetus dies just moments after fertilization and but before it is successfully implanted on the walls of the uterus.

According to most medics, the number of pregnancies that end early is quite high, estimated at between 15-20% that results in miscarriages. Most of these occur within the first six weeks of pregnancy. As a result, most women are unaware of their pregnancy status in the first place and most chemical pregnancy remain undiagnosed. In fact, the common chemical pregnancy symptoms are rarely evident and most women don’t even miss their periods. There are yet some newer, more accurate pregnancy tests that can detect pregnancies that are just days old making the detection of such cases much easier.

Common Causes of Chemical Pregnancy

There is a close similarity between the causes of chemical pregnancy and those of first trimester abortion. However, there are three common causes; hormonal deficiency, abnormalities of the uterus and chromosomal abnormalities.

Chromosomes:

Also considered to be the leading cause of chemical pregnancy, chromosomal abnormalities are normally present at conception and they affect the implantation of the embryo on the walls of the uterus, a factor that triggers the miscarriage. Medical practitioners believe there is nothing wrong with this, in fact arguing that it is a natural way of ensuring that only the best embryos are implanted and survive in the uterus.

Abnormalities of the Uterus:

Some women have deformed uterus or with some abnormalities that may affect the implantation and development of the foetus. The common abnormalities that can cause chemical pregnancy include sub mucous fibroids and deformities such as septate uterus.

Deficiency of Hormones:

The progesterone hormone is crucial and is responsible for the maintenance of the pregnancy. Before the complete development of the placenta, especially during the first six weeks of the pregnancy, progesterone is produced by the ovaries’ corpus luteum to sustain it. Some women suffer from luteal phase defect, a condition that results into poor formation of corpus luteum and affects progesterone production, resulting in chemical pregnancy.

Many women may be susceptible to these conditions, but are actually not aware of how they may affect their chemical pregnancy. An appointment with the doctor is highly recommended.
